Affected by a difficult history involving personal losses and abusive dynamics, Naila started deconstructing the mechanisms involved in interpersonal relationships - from this the series 'Embracing and Repelling' was born.
Different routes on the same journey, different sides of the same coin. She scrutinises the close relationship in her life, often uncovering universal truths such as that with great love and affection, comes significant friction and frustration. With a frequently dramatic exaggeration of facial cues, she displays the feelings shared by the sitters with brilliant clarity, whether these be joy, fear, passion or rage.
Naila Hazell (b.1981) grew up in Baku, Azerbaijan and is currently based in London. In 2021, she received the Lyon and Turnbull Award. Recent selected group exhibitions include: Face to Face, (Gillian Jason Gallery, London, 2022), Distortion & Dissonance, (Where's The Frame?, London, 2022), Inspire 2022, (D Contemporary, London, 2022), Figurative Art Now, (Mall Galleries, London, 2021), Fake News, (Offshoot Gallery, London, 2020) and White and Black, (Azerbaijan National Museum, Baku, 2009). She has solo exhibitions at the Azerbaijan Cultural Centre in London, The Hogarth Health Club and the Baku Art Centre Gallery in Baku, Azerbaijan.
